Dear Readers,
No really-- thoughts and prayers…
Every day, I have a task. I want to do the task but it takes a lot of time and energy. The task is to talk to my mother. Haha not *that* kind of time and energy. I mean literally--it takes me a minimum of three tries over the course of, let's say, 15 or 20 minutes, up to a maximum of, let's say, twenty+ tries over the course of an entire day to call my mother. She is in a care facility in New York City, technically a rehab hospital.
One issue is that Gloria really can't manage an iPhone on her own, so we need to call in to her. The next issue is that there is one cordless phone at the nurses' station and everyone's relatives are calling every day, too, so it's in use. Or the nurses and aides themselves are busy and can't get the phone. But the real culprit seems to be a phone system from what seems like the late '60's , crossed wires, inadvertent party lines, and all.
For anyone who knows her, unexpected as it is, Gloria adores the place. The recent move to the room by the elevator --not my first choice, whether in a 5-Star hotel or skilled nursing facility. "But I love the action!" she told me today. Okay, so somehow she is extremely happy and insanely healthy. Yes, miraculously, having been directly exposed to Covid-19 at least twice (that we know of!), in the midst of a constant stream of front line health workers and extremely compromised people. She will turn 93 in a couple of weeks.
Yes, it's a lot of time and energy to get through every day, but I'm writing about it, finally, after nearly 7 months. 7 months! of the daily phone calls and not seeing her in person (just a few blocks away!) because I guess I am just finally, finally admitting that I am really goddam pissed that this evil, race-baiting, gooney bird sham President screwed this pandemic response up so royally. It is just not right.
In other semi-political news, watch this beautiful, simple, hilarious documentary called Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President. It is made by a woman who worked for me long ago and who, more importantly, truly inspired me. She is one of the first people I ever met for whom I thought the phrase *incredible personal style* was invented for. I lived through the Carter presidency as a teen. Before I watched the film, I really thought I had been aware of so much about him and that political era. Spoiler alert: I wasn't. The film is a literal tonic for these times. And speaking of Jimmy Carter and amazing women, how about this lady?
I have so many links for you to click on in this note it will take you a long time to read it but, another spoiler alert, at least a couple of them are worth it cuz it might be the only laughs you get for a while.
Mattress debate: on hold for another week.
Toe status: reaaaaalllly almost there, but not quite.
In the meantime, thank you to a great crop of guest curators this week-- Karen, Julie, Nancy, in particular. It is a chock-full week on every front. The LZ Sunday Paper™ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
