Readers,
To be perfectly honest, I am putting the finishing touches on this week's edition of the Paper in the final throes of my Yom Kippur fast. And after the fast is broken, the challenge will be focusing post-bagels, brisket, and booze.
The day-long fast isn't that big a deal. It's like a cleanse, sort of, or like any diet like The Whole 30, or Atkins, or Weight Watchers. Well, it's like a diet, minus any food at all. Instead of food you have a regime of self-awareness, just a taste of fat-free remorse, and a mid-day snack of absolution. The next weigh-in is next year, the reward is having made it through another year.
Semi-guiltily for me, I agreed to play tennis at 4pm on Yom Kippur. I figured it was well after I was done with temple, shofar blown, done deal, and not too far away from sundown anyway. However, I was really, really, really hungry by 4pm. I didn't exactly want to pass out on the tennis court, so I kookily put some chicken broth and last night's matzah ball shards (home-made! I thought they turned out well!) in a go-cup, and headed down to the courts. I had an apple (traditional, on the Jewish New Year) in my pocket in case of light-headedness emergency during the change-over.
Guess what, turns out that being insanely hungry and in a pretty pissy mood does wonders for one's return of serve. I mean KILLER. Doesn't do so much for light-hearted chit chat, however. Or mental capacity for keeping score or much else. Sorry, partner and opponents for the lack of frivolity!
Riding down the wood-slatted path home, pedaling madly to get home before a major cloud burst, guess who came out to rear his/her sly head at me? THE TENNIS-SHOE-STEALING FOX. Just brazenly wandering, I guess in search of an unsuspecting sneaker or flip flop to line his ever-chillier den. Well, after the stare-down, I somehow wondered if he/she knew who returned my shoe and was trying to tell me, somehow. Don't think so, actually. He/she just looked skinny and hungry (maybe he/she was fasting, too?) and mean-ish. I merrily rode past that shoe-stealing coat-or at-least-stole-of-the-future thinking that it's been a magical mystery tour of a summer, what with stolen and returned shoes and visitations from nature, and I was going home to host a break fast and, later, finish off this newsletter.
The whole high holiday season is nerve-wracking important for me.
These days, every week the news is nerve-wracking and important to me, too! I seek to expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in politics, business, media, and tech, along with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. I think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Every week I hope to deliver at least one good laugh.
Thank you to so many subscribers who write to me to share stories of their own experiences, or wake me up to articles, ideas, or trends I've missed or aren't thinking about.
