Dear Readers,
Happy New Year!
Greetings from the Arctic! And by that I mean New York City.
Actually, the final days of my 2017 and first of 2018 were spent in the literal Arctic, in a place whose topography inspired this week's masthead.
The streetlight tableau pictured is just about the most urban that Finland, 250km north of the Arctic Circle, gets. As opposed to visiting during the months of The Land Of The Midnight Sun, we visited during the period of time known as the Instant Seasonal Affective Disorder-inducing "Kaamos" or "Land Of The Mid-Day Pitch-Darkness." The sun does not break the horizon line for approximately one month, from early December to sometime in January, depending on your latitude. You can experience this as either beautiful and awe-inspiring or such that it gives you that slightly sick feeling of waking up in the freezing, pitch darkness of the winter of your childhood, and hurrying out to make the 6:40am high school bus in 11th Grade.
Some Myths of the Arctic were strengthened:
--yes, every menu has reindeer on it and no, it's not because it's at a game-focused foodie restaurant in Williamsburg.
--that seeing the aurora borealis is weird and spectacular and worth a ridiculously long, arduous journey and frigid, dark time commitment.
Some myths were busted:
--that igloos are actually "warm." No, they're not. They're freezing cold.
--that ""Arctic Char" is a real fish. At the next opportunity, question your local fishmonger or server in detail as to exactly where they procure their supposedly Arctic fish, Char or otherwise.
--that there's no good Chinese food in the Arctic.
In all seriousness, this is probably the best Chinese food I have had outside of China. Seriously, it was actually authentic and delicious. The fellow who served us emigrated from Hong Kong less than two years ago. He characterized the move by acknowledging that Hong Kong had a "slightly busier" lifestyle pace than the town, population 3000, we were dining in.
ICYwere wondering-- No, I didn't win my customized travel bingo, but out of the 12 family members playing, a very deserving 10-year-old did. She nailed it with "minor injury," and not, mercifully, "hospital" or "vomit" in her winning square.
Right now, I'm putting that stinking heap of trash called #2017 out on the doorstep and hoping that someone takes it out to the garbage barge of history. Here's to the #hashtags of the future being more joyful, peaceful, healthful, and less hysterical. This week's news about women in business, politics, media, and the culture may or may not get us off on the right foot. Special shout-out to Julie F. who saved my internet-deprived, storm-delayed, jet-lagged butt from a blank slate this week, as well as Nancy, BZ, Alex, Lisa, Elyse, Katherine, Sona, and many others.
Send me stuff you think is interesting here.
I've been off Twitter for weeks, and to tell you the truth, it is actually a huge mental health benefit. But when duty calls I'll get back on. Then, you can get a daily fix of all the news about women--and some other random stuff--from me.
Some images relating to this blog are on Insta @LZSundayPaper. I got great feedback from last week's all-pictorial newsletter. I may do more like it. In the meantime, send me amazing pics of women and I'll post and tag/thank you!
Or follow me @LZFloors There's always something interesting out there, even when things are looking down.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
