Greetings,
A thought from L.A. on gratuities:
Driving around. Wherever you go--Meetings. Restaurants. Hotels--even Valet Parking at Malls because you didn't build in 30 extra minutes to park and find the movie theater in the giant complex.
In any of those situations, it's not really possible to "forget" to tip the valet car-parker a buck or two. He jogs to your car and brings it back to you. He is usually holding your car keys in one hand with his other hand on the open door. You need to pass by him, often closely, in order to get the keys and get in. You make the exchange.
That's part of his salary calculation, I'd guess. That seems fair enough, like a waiter's tip. Or, at least that's just the way it is.
But it is entirely possible to forget to tip your chambermaid. You are packing up, maybe a little late, going to your last meetings before heading to the airport, or you used up all your small bills tipping the valet or the guy who brings up your boarding pass printout from the front desk. Or maybe you just don't think about tipping her. You rarely cross paths with her directly, maybe a glimpse in the hallway once or twice.
Just a reminder, this lady cleans your hair out of bathtubs, changes your sheets, picks up your garbage and used tissues and Q-tips, clears your half-eaten room service tray, gets yelled at if she moves your things around too much in order to clean things and even more if she doesn't.
So, on your next hotel stay, please don't forget to leave money for her and probably increase the amount of what it was going to be. And yeah, implicit in the story is that I have never not once seen a female valet nor a male chambermaid, which i guess might be rebranded as a valette and chambermaster?
Every week, I clean the hair out of the journalistic drains to bring you the best and most important news about, but not exclusively for, women in business, digital, tech, media, music, tv, film, fashion, sports, and pop culture. Then I pull your Tesla-engineered newsletter around and stop in front of your doorstep, delivering it to you, scratch-free, on Sunday Morning.
This edition got very fat with lots of articles, this week, many of which you sent to me! So please don't body-shame it for being heavy this week and be sure to keep sending me any interesting items you see along the way here.
Peruse the back catalogue or sign up at LZSundayPaper.com.
Sometimes there's so much interesting stuff out there I can't wait 'til Sunday so I tweet it during the week. Follow me @LZSundayPaper.
Thank you!
LZ

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ (soon to be registered trademarked and copyrighted) launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes in size high, medium, and low. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
