L'Shanah Tovah! aka Happy Jewish New Year!
Speaking of which, Mazel Tov to the Clinton-Mezvinskys! Baby Charlotte, born a day after Rosh Hashanah and six days before Yom Kippur, now has the Jewish equivalent of having a birthday near Christmas (minus the presents). We will discover whether the Clinton-Mezvinskys pay attention to either or both of those holidays, as time passes.
In the meantime, let me give you some Judaism 101:
"The name "Yom Kippur" means "Day of Atonement," and that pretty much explains what the holiday is. It is a day set aside to "afflict the soul," to atone for the sins of the past year."
Another scholarly text notes that confession and the chance for redemption is at the heart of Yom Kippur:
"In Judaism, confession (Hebrew וִדּוּי Widduy; Viddui) is a step in the process of atonement during which a Jew admits to committing a sin before God."
An incredible prayer called the Al Hayt is repeated 10 times over the course of Yom Kippur. It calls upon us to ponder pretty much anything you could ever have done, said, or even thought wrong.
Some of the 44 named offenses are easy to deny or cast off because they are actual crimes. Most people are not guilty of 'the sin which we have committed before You by embezzlement' or 'the sin of bribe-taking.'
Still others we might reject as irrelevant and out-moded, like 'the sins for which we are obligated to bring a burnt offering."
How about "The since we have committed before you by running to do evil"?
Perhaps still too strongly worded.
But there are dozens that seem more relevant than we might care to admit, no matter what your religious leaning.
Would you acknowledge "scheming against a fellow man" or "causeless hatred" or just a smidge of "hard-heartedness"?
Still too much? Well, God and the people who interpret what s/he meant are very clever. They have really put some thought into this, and I would be surprised if you found nothing to relate to.
For instance, maybe "evil talk about another", "a haughty demeanor", "foolish talk," or "the prattle of our lips?" rings a bell.
No? Okay. Perhaps "the glance of an eye," "the passing of judgment," or "bearing a grudge" is more your style?
Come now. Seasons of many Emmy-winning dramas and reality shows alike have been built on less, which for me would potentially fall under the listed category of the "sin of business dealings."
Good-hearted people, even the lowly and common-place "scoffing" is a sin. Surely, surely, you have scoffed just once this year!
I personally gave in several paragraphs ago: GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY!!!
Like the scripture says, Maimonedes will reward me for this confession. Unless of course I just committed the "sin of insincere confession." Oy.
If, amongst you more saintly creatures, there is still a sliver of an escape hatch of denial of personal responsibility, you're still not in the clear. There's a catch-all, all-encompassing bucket for the sins you have committed "knowingly or unknowingly," "intentionally or unintentionally."
GOTCHA.
At this point, if you're committing the inter-related sins of eye-rolling and snorting, or the most cardinal "sin of the consideration of Unsubscribing via Mailchimp," I both understand and forgive.
Every week, we try to bring both the virtues and the sins of the world of women in business to you via The LZSundayPaper. Handed down from on high, we break it down into the ancient sects of digital, tech, media, fashion, sports, and culture. We know for a fact that God expects one good laugh, so be sure not to displease her/him.
Also, don't forget to confess to us any interesting stuff you think we may have missed, and do tell us what you think at OR tell people you think will enjoy it to sign up at LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
Many of the articles we don't have room to include in the weekend edition are tweeted out all during the week! You can read/see/scoff at them and wait for next year to confess, if you follow it/me/us @LZSundayPaper.
Enjoy! And have a peaceful, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ (soon to be registered trademarked and copyrighted) launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes in size high, medium, and low. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
