Dear Readers,
A continued Happy Jewish New Year to you and yours.
I'm still pretty incensed about Serena's loss in the final of the U.S. Open tennis championship last week. Like I said, yes she was outplayed, pure and simple. The debate that emerged around her loss, whether or not she behaved in a "sportsmanlike" fashion, whether or not her opponent was "robbed" of a purely joyous win, and especially whether or not the chair umpire's decisions had a strain--on the spectrum of somewhat benign or virulent--of sexism and racism has been hotly debated.
I have a good friend. A very good friend. Our relationship falls into a certain kind of category. I couldn't feel closer to him, yet I can't quite remember where and how we actually met. We have a lifetime of work intersections between us, yet we've never actually worked together. I have seen him through the toughest of times including illness, recovery, death of a loved one yet there are many, many things we don't know about each other. We communicate each with each other nearly every day, yet we see each other infrequently. We have had very different upbringings and families, distinctly different outward appearances, wholly different approaches to life in many ways, yet I have been known to say that he is my spiritual doppelganger in many other ways. I also like to say that he is the living manifestation of my unchecked id.
Jason Hirschhorn is a curator's curator. Even more obsessive, Jason devotes nearly seven days a week, for nearly 7, or maybe 8 years by now, to the rigor of what he likes to call "reading the internet." This week, he gave me a high honor when our obsessions crossed and we could not get over the Serena dialogue erupting around us. I guest curated his widely read and much shared MediaRedef. Our SportsREDEF SET is here: click if you want to immerse in a 360-degree dialogue about Unsports(wo)manlike Behavior? Serena Williams: "The Rules," Race, Gender, and Debate. The takes are divided.
I come at it from the place that once again, an unwarranted physical act by a powerful man causes a woman--even an even more powerful one-- to lose her dignity, be judged and shamed and actually punished by yet another one. The invocation of "rules" as sacrosanct in this one instance, but in almost every other, ignored. A rule that has a simple cure-- punish the coach not the player who didn't ask for the coaching. FIrst infraction, warning. Second, leave the stadium. Third, banned from the next match and fined.
In my view, her reaction was the best and only one she could muster at the time. Most every other woman subject to an unwarranted advance and harsh punishment is later shamed and deeply questioned as to why she kept quiet at the time, if she was so upset and so aggrieved. Here, when the point is raised and the upset is registered, the reaction is just as bad, if not worse.
And to those dissenting opinions, including Martina's widely read op-ed piece that raises the question of why she shouldn't "act like a man" but instead should rise above their undignified behavior and not seek equality on those negative terms, I will say I am severely disappointed. Martina is one of the few who put herself on the line to stand up to, among other things, unequal pay parity between men and women on the tour. I don't think it's right to pick and choose which types of male behaviors, and their rewards and punishments, women should choose to emulate.
Today, I wanted to maybe use the ReDef curated set as the only fodder in the newsletter. But darn it! There is a raft of other news. I mean a boatload. Sheesh. So take a little extra time to check out our Serena round-up, follow Jason on Twitter, and also read these important items by and about women in business, politics, and the best of pop culture. If you aren't already a subscriber, sign up here. You'll receive the newsletter each week, straight to your inbox each Sunday morning.
Thanks to my many loyal, smart, contributors who send me pieces I otherwise would not likely come across. Dale, Lisa, Julie, Elyse, David, Nancy, Miriam, Mallun, please do keep sending me articles, photos, or videos you think are interesting here.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
