Dear Readers,
News you can use:
You have to get a RealID, also known as an enhanced driver's license, by October 1, 2020 in order to travel domestically by plane. You can continue to travel with a passport, but I personally don't like to have it with me all the time on domestic business trips or vacations.
Good news: it's only January so you have 8 months. Bad news: the DMV is already completely overwhelmed and it takes a bit of planning to get this done. Sad news: the RealID Act was passed in 2005 in the wake of 9/11 (a modest 4-year gap) and nothing ever happened to implement it for another15 years, til now.

After I got my paperwork together, I went over to my local DMV, where I was told the wait was 5-6 hours for walk-ins. I had gone on-line to see if there was a way to make an appointment in advance, which there was. But, too bad for me and everyone else, there were no online appointments available from now through April, and they only work three months ahead. I asked the DMV info-man if there was a way to make an appointment in person. Good news--there was! You go in and wait on a particular line (20 mins, Window 1) to make an appointment for another day. I got one for the next day, Saturday.
When I went back yesterday at my appointed time (12:15--12:25pm) I still had to wait on no less than four lines and it took about an hour
1) first, wait in line for the DMV person stationed by the door to confirm I actually had an appointment (10 mins). The slightly rude, slow-talking-down-to-people DMV worked informed the people in front of me on line that the DMV actually wasn't "open," it was just for people with appointments. They'd have to come back during the week in order to make an appointment for a Saturday. Sadly, each of the people, one after another, told a version of the story that they had come on a Saturday because they couldn't take off work during the week. DMV Catch-22 #1.
2) wait in another line (Window 13) to get a numbered ticket, like at a deli-counter. FYI my number was 4156. (15 mins)
3) wait in another line (Window 25) to get my picture taken (20 mins, albeit to be fair, the first 10 minutes or so was a wait because noone was behind the counter).
4) wait (in waiting area) for my number to come up. (20 mins)
During that waiting time, I had the thought to make appointments for my other family members so they wouldn't also have to take time off work on a weekday to go to the DMV to make an appointment and have to come back or spend 4-5 hours doing it without an appointment. So I went back to the window I had been to prior (Window 1), the one at which you could make appointments in advance. There was no line at all (0 Minutes)! I walked right up, and remarked that it was the first window I had gone to that day with no line. The extremely nice, efficient, polite, totally together-looking person behind the counter offered that, in fact, that no one had come to his counter all day. I recalled the thing I discovered earlier about the DMV actually not being open-- remember, you already had to have an appointment to get in. I floated the theory to him that perhaps no one had been to his appointment-making window all day because the only customers in the DMV were people who *already* had appointments. He agreed whole-heartedly that that was likely the case, and concluded that that's why he really enjoys his Saturday shift at the appointment-making window, window 1. No one comes to his window.
I finished making my appointments for family members just as my number, 4156, came up on all the video monitors and the Whole-Foods-esque check-out line voice-guy called it out over the PA system.
5) Walked to Window 3. Handed over social security card, passport, license, W2, 1099, bank statement, utility bill, cancelled check--I was prepared with a raft of documents. The kind DMV lady walked me through some application glitches. She went away for a bit, as they do, and then came back. I swiped for $80.50 (government getting rich on hundreds of millions of people doing this, right?). Went on my way. (10 mins).
That's the saga of my RealID. It should arrive in two weeks, with one of the worst photos ever taken for any ID, ever, due to the Saturday attire, gale-force winds and driving rain. Take a number and pore over this week's most important, thought-provoking news about women in politics, news, business, media, health, the arts, and pop culture. Hand-picked by me, for you.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh.
