Greetings!
Happy Father's Day!
The Sunday Paper might seem less timely or even less like a legitimate news source than usual, because for a themed edition we wouldn't cover a huge, irritating, outrageous story like this one, even thought it fits a Sunday Paper sort of topic, unless George Will is a Dad, which he is. And his daughter, presumably, went to college. So maybe it was worth including after all.
This one, which is entitled "One Way To End Violence Against Women? Married Dads" technically qualifies for a Father's Day edition just from the headline! I'm not sure it's going to win any "inspirational things I read on Father's Day" awards, since it's about how women are better off married so they don't get abused. The Washington Post does not deserve breakfast in bed today, that is for sure.
On some holidays, we've debated whether we actually mean it when we say things like "I wish every day could be Christmas!" or "You should treat me like you do on Valentine's Day, every day!" I think we've come to the conclusion that it's not really true. It would be like some kind of real life "Groundhog Day," but without Bill Murray in it, which would make it unfunny and depressing.
BTW, does anyone else think that the new Tom Cruise movie, "Live Another Day" (whose tagline is "Live, Die, Repeat" because he dies over and over again, in order to come back to life and re-live the same day and try to change something for what purpose I don't know) is also like a weird and depressing version of Groundhog Day? Maybe also because it doesn't have Bill Murray in it. Tom and Bill are both dads, fyi.
I gave a commencement speech this week. The best thing was that it was really 100% written for the graduation high school girls, but the feedback I got was strong, emotional, and positive not only from them, but also from the dads, moms, extended families, friends, and the very fine school administration. It was very gratifying. It was one of the harder and more consequential (in my mind) things I've written and delivered. It was like going public with parenting, mentoring, and giving employee feedback … and then being worried about being graded, because it was for a school! I wish my own dad and my husband's dad would have been able to hear it. They would have given me high marks!!
Let's give any Dads we know a good grade today. And engage them in a positive conversation about their girls, sisters, wives, or mothers.
My friends in big corporations are still not getting their LZSP, so they might miss this one. If you get this at your personal emailbox, and if you have the chance, ask folks you work with if they received the LZ Sunday Paper.
Today, we expose and recirculate news about, and very frequently by, women who are thinking about their fathers; fathers who are thinking about being fathers to girls; and other variations on the theme.
We'll be back with more business, media, tech and culture next week.
Send us stuff you think we may have missed, and tell people you think will enjoy it to sign up, at LZSundayPaper@gmail.com, or visit the new site!
Enjoy!
LZ

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ (soon to be registered trademarked and copyrighted) launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes in size high, medium, and low. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
