Readers,
I guess you could call this week's edition "super-sized," but that would be gross. Not as gross as this. But then again few things are. Or as manipulative, anger-based, threatening, and just plain vile. Also, it's not so much "super-sized" as "super-focused" on one subject. Harassment. And its close relatives manipulation, coercion, and predation.
One of the most amazing things about this week -- just one week! -- is that we've had a chance to read incredibly smart, thoughtful, and articulate stories from actors, artists, and journalists. We all wish they wouldn't have had occasion to be written, but now that the dam has burst, I have to look at it as empowering, on some level. There has to be a bright side. It isn't going to be that women are all of a sudden treated real good in the Valley, Hollywood, or anywhere else. But it is kind of a step. Kind of a big step. It's very unusual for someone who's done bad things for a long time to be called out, recognized for what he is, and forced to reckon with his own actions. Swiftly and definitively. I don't think this is a case of rush to judgment, or social media swirl, either.
For the future, it ain't gonna be too different in terms of garden-variety ass-pinching and leers and guys assessing women on a hot-or-not basis. I also think that alotta folks--men--are scared and a little pissed that the rules of engagement are changing. In frats, at office parties, in board rooms.
I also wonder if the really bad -- clinically deranged -- stuff that was so casually dispensed by the men in the stories of the past week will really diminish. I'm not sure. Maybe at the very least the vast web of future facilitators won't go along so easily for the enabling ride.
'Til next week…
Speak out. Share. Insist.
Help expose and recirculate interesting content that is about essential news about women in politics, business, media, and tech, along with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. Do it!
