Dearest Readers,
This was a crap week. Last weekend, a small-aircraft crash in East Hampton that killed a young man, his grandparents, and the pilot. Then, Kate Spade and Tony Bourdain's self-inflicted deaths.
I am certain that almost everybody has a specific experience that makes these tragedies feel ultra-personal. So do I.
Social media and the rush to grieve collectively made each event extra weird and painfu for mel, not better. For some reason, people's memories of their first Kate Spade bag, related to the public world with enthusiastic sympathy, seemed to exacerbate the tragedy and explained nothing. Then the untimely death just a couple of days later,by the same means, seemingly out of nowhere, put the whole thing out of reach for me in terms of making sense of anything.
Tony Bourdain, found dead by our old pal, Top Chef judge and brilliant chef Eric Ripert. I remembered Bourdain's own stint as a guest judge for us. What a 'get' that was. I also remembered a brief moment in time when we either had the chance to-- or tried to and couldn't make the deal for-- his show. Amazingly, something that was probably a very big deal at the time I can't remember the details of.
The plane crash is the most painful. The most senseless, the closest hit to home. I hope you can process these events however best for you. It never ceases to amaze me that life just rolls on for everyone else, one way or another. Rightly so. Going to work, doing their thing. Me, included. But still.
It's either either more important than ever, or not worth a damn, to read these most important news items by and about women in business, politics, and the best of High/Low culture. This week, like every other.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
