Greetings after a quick trip to Los Angeles, "The Valley," and San Francisco!
I won't say that I'm a long-time Valley-goer, at least not of the Silicon variety, which I've only been visiting for the past five years or so. "The Valley" I know better is the San Fernando Valley near LA. The phrase "Valley Girl" was born in the early '80's, which grew into a phenomenon that took over the country's vernacular and pop culture. Martha Coolidge was the director of the eponymous movie. She, I learned recently, was the first woman President of the Directors Guild Of America. She joined the ranks of past presidents such as King Vidor, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and Frank Capra. I'd like to call that meeting to order.
Today's Valley is Silicon Valley. I didn't know, until a Google Search helped me out, that it is named for the Santa Clara Valley, geographically. I did know that it got its name in the era when most of the business and innovation in the region was centered on manufacturing silicon chips. What I also know is that many people say the word silicone instead of silicon when referring to this Valley and then everyone thinks of something else.
It was a great, super-charged trip. The business part was really interesting and good. But my main takeaway is that every single one of the folks I encountered in L.A. and Silicon Valley look better. Way better! Maybe this winter's unrelenting weather just gave us a real beating--or I'll just speak for myself. In LA, it looks like everyone found a TanFastic Sun Spa (this is not yet a registered trademark but I'm putting my application in today) that turned them a delightful, healthy hue. And every single one of the Angelenos I encountered is fit, smooth and sleek. Their clothes are never rumpled, I mean never not once, even though I'm pretty sure their car seats are not engineered substantially differently than my rental Prius'.
All I'll say about the Silicon Valley part of the trip is that I had a 6:45am breakfast. That is ayem, ante-meridian, as in in the morning. I am not one who is normally thought of as under-energetic, but when the person had asked to book the breakfast, I laughed at his very funny, obviously kidding suggestion and then had to recover with a slight fakecoughahem, and quickly agreed as if that were actually normal.
Breakfast was delicious! In the expansive and stunningly beautiful-viewed dining room, it was amazing that it wasn't close to empty. I know plenty of super-ambitious, aggressive business people who get stuff done early in the ayem. They wake up, clock their sleep cycles off their UpBands, do some important emailing, maybe even do a light workout before they call their broker. That's maybe a New York or L.A. type of power person. These Valley folks, however, look more like they had just completed a half iron-man competition and had made half a billion dollars before I was taking a first sip of latte.
Trip summary: after my first two stops on the west coast itinerary, I hadn't seen one single person who looked like they needed a haircut. Not even a trim.
On to San Francisco: I had a more comfortable time in the City during a half-mile walk up Market Street, going from one meeting to another, where I observed several people in conversation with themselves. The kind where no, they did not have iPhone earbuds in their ears. Yes, several of them definitely needed a trim. And, after I had donned one of my 3-outfits-for-4-days from my handy Tumi rollerbag, I had finally found West Coasters who were equally as rumpled as I.
