Dear Readers,
January, at least in New York City, is everything it's purported to be.
Looking on the brightside, however, here are some things you can accomplish if you decide not to go to CES, The Consumer Electronics Show (CES is timed, irritatingly, the very first week after New Year's and takes place in Las Vegas. Blech, and blech, respectively.)
This is just a small portion of my January To-Do list achieved with my unexpected take-back of 4 days. Yes, my irritating minutiae, color-coded in the universal language of a PowerPoint "dashboard:"
Problem: Standing Kitchen-Aid mixer blade and motor destroyed by half-cocked attempt to mix rock-hard dark brown sugar into batter.
**Additional challenge: apparently there are no more small-appliance repair stores in Manhattan.
Solution: drive to Brooklyn.
Status: solved (temporary)
Problem: The mixer comes back fixed, however with no knob to raise and lower the entire arm in/out of the mixing bowl. No responsibility taken at cantankerous Brooklyn fix-it shop.
Solution: Google; questionable search return of Etsy. Yes, a company hand-makes replacement knobs and advertises on Etsy. Pro-tip for Kitchen-Aid: please provide replacement parts on your website.
Status: cookies made successfully
Problem: Global Entry expires without notice, preventing travel with handy "TSA-PreCheck" during government shutdown, 6 flights scheduled in next three weeks.
Solution: Spend inordinate amount of time on impenetrable federal ".gov" website filing for "renewal."
Status: "iffy."
Problem: A bajillion Apple devices for a family of 5, since the dawn of the iPod, are listed in all of our iCloud and Find My iWhatever accounts. Everyone is getting everyone else's app downloads, texts and Facetime calls.
**Hypothesis: more of a problem for children than parents.
Solution: Spend inordinate amount of time on impenetrable Apple websites and devices, pinging and re-naming and deleting devices.
Status: double-authentication sucks.
Problem: New client wants even more detailed vetting of academic history**. Confession: Never knew difference between "summa" "magna" "cum laude" to begin with.
**Diploma buried in storage.
Solution: Email registrar
Status: A teachable moment: No Latin honors other than "magna" given at weird-grading Brown University due to hippie-activism of 1968.
Problem: Twitter is depressing
Solution: Take a Marie Kondo approach and Unfollow anyone who doesn't bring me joy.
Status: chicken out and wonder who will notice that I unfollowed them
Revised Solution: don't go on Twitter so much
Status: so far, so good
Those are just a few of the things you can do if you cancel a trip suddenly, and it's January and you'd rather do any of those things than go outside for four days, except that trip to Brooklyn. And yoga. But that's for another blog entry.

See you from airports across the country in the next coupla weeks with some extra long TSA lines, unfortunately, unless the government really surprises me--and us all.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
