Dear Folks,
A friend of mine sent me an old photo of a group of us who worked together in the late '90's. It was on Thursday, in fact, so I guess it qualifies as a legit TBT. I posted it in the Facebook group called "I Worked At MTV When It Was Cool To Work At MTV." It's a "closed" group where you have to ask permission to get in. They let me in! even though I worked at VH1. Which really wasn't cool at all, really, especially when we first got there. But we did our best.
So here's the picture of us VH1-ers from The Late '90's, HoJo's Times Square (RIP). It seems to have been an inadvertent quintuplet white button-down shirt sartorial twinning day, because whether you would consider it cool or not, I am positive we didn't have any themed dress-up days:
We sure look happy! I wonder, were we plotting the next Divas Live? The VH1 Fashion Awards that spawned the Zoolander character? Perhaps laughing at a talent-relations nightmare stemming from the clever-but-always-slightly-too-cheeky Pop-Up Video? Arguing over the most recent edition of The 100 Greatest Musicians/Albums/Songs lists? Thanks to Lee Chesnut (guy in the white shirt next to me) for sending this to Bill Flanagan (the guy with long hair in the white shirt next to him), who sent it to me. And like I said, I posted in the Facebook group. There, Rob Barnett (the guy in the white shirt wearing glasses, sitting next to Mike Benson who is slightly blocked and wearing a sportcoat over his white button- down) informed me that it was Wayne Isaak who, in pre-selfie days, was tasked with taking the picture. It will be left to our imaginations to ponder whether or not Wayne, too, was white-shirted that day.
White button down shirts are still classic. HoJo's was classic. They don't make veneer and vinyl the way they used to.
A few years after this photo was taken, I bought a photograph that reminded me of the seven years I spent working in Times Square. Thank you, Landon Nordeman, for this sleek, densely layered, professional art photo! Yes it's the same HoJo's, maybe even the same table, looking in from the outside. You can match up the ketchup bottle and sugar packets that you see in the VH1 photo. Slick as Landon's photo is, you can also see the reflections of the very last vestiges of the "seedy" Times Square of yore.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ (soon to be registered trademarked and copyrighted) launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes in size high, medium, and low. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
