Happy Independence Day!
This week: lots of news, much of it about the interpretation of the Constitution through the lens of nine appointed 'splainers.
A schoolyard phrase comes to mind. In days of yore, (after the revolution but before reality television), it was used to rule on many decisions that were arguably (though not definitively) less important than this week's. For example, how to decide which tv channel to watch or how to legislate schoolyard recess kickball rules.
The phrase is: "majority rules."
Dissenting opinions today are received much like they always were. No matter how eloquently or vehemently stated, the verbalizers are passed over and ultimately struck dumb. In many cases, lots of fireworks ensue. July 4th has come and gone. If we didn't behold the full monty of the rockets' red glare(s), the East Coast had a few damp squibs, most certainly.
We're wrapping up the road trip. Thinking back over the past couple of weeks of car, plane, and tent-bound experiences, I recall a fun pre-cursor of Independence Day. It was with a waiter in a very fine gastro-pub about an hour outside of London. As we were paying the bill, the server produced some promotional material regarding a July 4th Celebration dinner. I laughed.
July 4th, England, a celebration. Not normally three great tastes that go great together. I noted the hilarity (to me) of the dinner's highlight being the pairing of American micro-brew beers with the 5-course English Michelin-star gastronomy. I expected some acknowledgment of said hilarity.
What I got: none.
I tried it every which way. When prompted by lines such as "Really? It's not a national day of mourning here?" or "That's funny that you could have something like a taste test between Guinness and Coors Light Cold-Activated Fresh-Brew Widemouth, he was having very little of it.
We paid, departing with a final, honestly sympathetic "I'm sorry for your loss." A blank stare. A final "cheers."
One week we're gayly the color of the rainbow. The next, patriotically red, white & blue. Every week, in black, white, and re(a)d all over, The LZSundayPaper exposes and recirculates news about, and very frequently by, women in business, media, and culture. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect at least one good laugh. Send us stuff you think we may have missed, and tell people you think will enjoy it to sign up, at LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
Enjoy!
