Dearest Readers,
Two tardy thank-you notes and an admission of lack of journalistic standards:
First, to all the people who gave me advice as to what sneakers I should buy when I needed to replace my long-worn original Nike Flyknits: version 1.0, thin-soled, foot-hugging. I am not really a sneaker person for non-sports wearing, and I could not find the right replacement. The Sunday Paper readers had a tremendous range of opinions. From true orthopedics to passionate endorsements of specific models of well-known brands, I looked at many of the recommendations.
I ended up with a classic: Nike Cortez's. Two pair, actually. I somehow screwed up ordering on the not-so-user-friendly Nike.com website. I played around with this "customize your shoe" feature. And instead of deleting them out of my shopping cart, I bought them. It went from "oh wow, you can design your own pair! Great idea!" to "huh, those Nike designers are actually a lot better than me and that's why they have their job" real fast. So when I hit "confirm purchase" I bought the pair that I wanted, along with the should-have-been trashed pair. But the lag time on the Custom version is around 6 weeks so I didn't know my error until the new, custom, definitively uglier pair, arrived.
Of all the things that are bad about the Nike customer experience, the one amazing thing is that you are actually allowed to return a custom pair that was made ugly by you! But I felt guilty for some reason for being the purveyor of the offensive design and pushing that back on Nike. Go figure, I took responsibility for my own custom uglification. So now I have two almost identical pairs, one just slightly… off, aesthetically. Leave it to the experts, folks, is my advice.
But the real shoe thank you goes to my first ever LZ Sunday Paper "gifted" item which was sent to me by the shoe-start-up, Rothy's. These are not sneakers, they are "flats," but truly wear like like my beloved old flat-soled Nike foot-huggers and-- bonus!--are made entirely from recycled water bottles. Thank you again, for sending them.
Second thank you-- I have no idea how I even came to be deserving of two pair of new-fangled reading glasses called Bunny Eyez. A devoted reader/entrepreneur (presumably one who needs reading glasses to be a Reader of the Paper) sent them. Bunny Eyez' claim to fame is that they unhinge and tilt down and over and around for various tasks where the actual glasses get in the way of doing the thing you need to do but you need glasses to do it. Get it? Well I just got them and am very excited to give them an in-depth try out.
So far I am fully in favor of promotional items and can only hope that some devoted readers are just about to send vouchers and coupons for other items. Perhaps jewels? cars? Cash? I am studying up on workplace ethics by reading the Pruitt Handbook. We'll see how that goes, but in the meantime I will fully disclose such relationships and acknowledge that receipt of such objects, particularly cash, *may* influence my opinions.
Final thanks to all the great readers who check the Paper out each week and read the most important news items by and about women in business, politics, and the best of pop culture. If you aren't already a subscriber, sign up here. You'll receive the newsletter each week, straight to your inbox each Sunday morning. And do keep sending me articles, photos, or videos you think are interesting here. Or cash, as previously mentioned.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
