Readers,
I am not a deeply religious person but I have some faith. I don't exactly believe in ghosts but I do love Scooby-Doo episodes that contain ghosts, even if the ghost always turn out to be a grumpy old man in a sheet. Just this week, the spirit of my father Abbey, who died several years ago, came to visit me not once, but twice, on the eve of his birthday and again on his actual birthday, September 1st.
And no, I do not believe Serena Williams' baby is my father, reincarnated.
What happened was that on the eve of his birthday Thursday night--really it was the wee hours of the morning on Friday, his birthday, I dreamed vividly of him. I mean detailed, long-ago scenarios re-enacted in their entirety. Taking photo-booth photos for our Great Neck Park District municipal pool identification cards. Going to do errands at stores that went out of business 40 years ago. Learning to drive.
**Pro-tips: always make a wide sweep when pulling into a parking space. Ignore turning lanes and use the wide sweep technique from the middle lane, while making eye contact with the annoyed person in the actual turning lane. And always remember, if they have time to honk at you they have time to stop--don't be afraid to make the aggressive merge.
I woke up, possessed to go see the house on Fire Island that his mother had from the late '50's onwards, that we visited through my 20's. I went. I visited with the couple who bought the house 26 years ago. We toured, they pointed out the pre- and post-Sandy changes. Still, almost every significant piece of furniture and artwork is still intact.
I came back, put on his vintage (and by that I mean really old) U.S. Open bucket hat, and went to play tennis. (I played well, thanks for asking).
So let's cut back to Grandpa Abbey's shiva, where after the very last guest left on the very last night, a beautiful, big butterfly came to visit on the outside of my mother's apartment on a high floor in Greenwich Village. This is not a usual occasion in New York City. It came. It attached itself to the window somehow. It hung out there for quite a while. Me and my entire family remarked on it. Now, Abbey was not exactly a total nature guy but he had a huge connection to certain outdoorsy things, including butterflies. It made a ton of sense that he had come to make sure the deli, sticky buns, lox and bagels were properly consumed in his honor at this Jewish memorial. Actually we all copped to the fact the had come back to try to partake of the rugelach, at whatever peril.
So then back to yesterday on the tennis court: for pretty much the entire hour, this guy was at my feet. Just moving his wings up and down, slowly. Moved back and forth with me on ad/deuce court. Switched sides on the odd service games. Didn't bother with anyone else on the court.
It was weird. It was so weird that I kind of told my tennis partner the entire story. It was so weird that our opponents remarked on it themselves, and then I told them. I tell you it was positively freaky! But very satisfying and beautiful, too! But weird.
So there you have it.

We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh.
