Let's get ready to flush 2020 down the tubes, my friends.
I'm finding that even in this most disrupted year the annual rhythms of the season persists. Are you finding the same?
I am winding down. Once again, Thanksgiving hit and the three-week end-of-the-year countdown began. I began madly scheduling the many delayed and put-off meetings, now set to be completed by Friday (albeit by video). I am confronting long-buried emails in my personal, work, and SundayPaper inboxes that require an extra bit of work or effort so that their deletion feels satisfying rather than evasive.
Also, I am having the fantasy of a 'real break' over Christmas and New Year's. But what does that mean, I ponder? A break from…a chance to…do what? Be at home? Not go on business trips? Cook great food? Clean like a madwoman? Spend time with family? Not have to dress for work? Commit to exercise a bit more? Catch up with friends I haven't seen in a while? All of the above. Oh wait, you mean what I have been doing since March 12th, without respite?
It's kind of funny that this year--which is truly unlike any other--actually feels, in this regard, like any other. Actually *every* year, despite vastly different life circumstances over time, ignites this particular Circadian rhythm. I had a huge corporate job, I now have a robust independent advisory--same. I had three little kids, tweens, teens, I now have nearly grown kids--same. We are truly creatures of habit. Unshakeable in many ways.
One of my biggest takeaways from Covid-life is what some call "resiliency" and the indomitable spirit of humanity. I call it "I'm going to go out to brunch even if it kills me." Meaning, despite this worldwide epidemic, the loss of millions of lives, the risking of personal health and that of loved ones, legions of folks are charging out of the house this very morning to a barricade-enclosed yurt in a closed off bus lane in their city of choice, to have mediocre (at best) eggs and a (watered down) mimosa for a lot more money than it's worth. We are not so far from our friends, the lowly ant. We shall rebuild our lives/have brunch, no matter what. Or, as the inimitable Chumbawumba so aptly put it c.1998, We get knocked down, we get up again.
Similarly, every week, I knock down all of last week's newsletter and patiently rebuild. Grain of sand by grain of sand, article by article, I construct the newsletter that now awaits your perusal. The most, absolutely, positively Covid-safe items of import about, by, and for women in Politics, Business, Tech, Science, Sports, and Pop Culture. And, my treat! A Hanukkah (it's not too late!) and Christmas Gift Guide!
Readers, do send me more resources, plus any articles, photos, or videos you think I need to see right here.

I'll see you for a year-end sign-off next week.
I will see if I can make good on my threat to myself to take a short hiatus in which I will collect my thoughts, purge my closets, recapture some energy, and deliver us into 2021 with renewed verve and enthusiasm.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
