Dear Subscribers,
Feels like Spring here in NYC. A couple of lovely 65-degree+ days and many April showers days, as well. But in case you feel like staying in, here are some of the things I have seen or want to see:
If you're into the guy/thug/people die genre, but with comedy or extraordinarily sympathetic and complex characters:
Barry, Season 2 just started. On HBO. Stellarly reviewed. Start with Season 1 if you haven't yet started at all.
Gomorrah. Netflix. Who knew that I would ever have an appetite for yet another mob story? Try this one, set in contemporary Naples. Yes, in Italian. Yes, extremely violent. Yes, with pathos and riveting acting. And a helluva mob wife, Donna Imma. Again, stellar reviews.
(Literally) obscenely funny, can't get enough. Stretching out watching, hoping it's never over: Veep, the final season, on HBO. What could this record-settingly lauded show get in its final season? Great, well deserved (again) reviews.
Just dropped on Amazon, I am going to watch Donald Glover's secret Rihanna movie-ish project, Guava Island. While Donald Glover himself is a genius, so is his director, Hiro Murai, who also happened to direct the first two episodes of each season of 'Barry.' I am curious to see how these intensely creative folks created a "breezy romp."
Shame on me and it's about time, I am going to watch Killing Eve which is really -- along with Veep -- the cultural sweet spot of this newsletter and its content. Never heard more people raving about what a must-see show it is. Except for 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,' which I truly didn't care for. So, no promises but I have a better feeling about this one.
And how about this-- if you are not exactly in the mood for male hitmen, female killers, subtitles, or looking up your infernal streaming passwords, check out this free podcast on my favorite subject, scammers! And if you think everyone and her sister is getting in on the podcast game, you'd be right. Amazingly, the AARP has put together a fabulous duo of interviewer and expert, with an array of scamtastic subjects. The expert is Frank Abagnale, the best con artist in history, who was portrayed by Leo DiCaprio, co-starring Tom Hanks, in the Steven Spielberg film Catch Me If You Can. You will find both Season 1 and 2 of The Perfect Scam here --or if you're embarrassed that people will see that you have been on the AARP website if the FBI comes to look at your browser history, you could be the first person to use 'private browsing' mode for embarrassment not over your porn habits, but your AARP digital footprint. Or you could listen to the podcast on Apple or Spotify.
Don't be embarrassed to send me articles, photos, or videos you think are interesting, important, or amusing here.
