It's JUNE!
This week, a couple of steps lower on the ladder of literacy than last week's listicle discussion, here's my own personal, shareable, Tweetable 3-item list-i-blog for you:
1) Something I learned last week from new friends/peers in the world of Publishing:
The publishing house, Knopf, is definitively pronounced Kuh-NOPF, not NOPF. I was pretty sure, but it was one of those things where I always thought people looked at me funny when I said Kuh-NOPF, on those somewhat rare occasions I've had to invoke the name of that publishing house.
I think this insecurity stems from an early childhood mispronunciation-with-a-touch-of-dyslexia of the word Psalm, which for some reason I read as PSSS-lahm.
2) Something I wonder about:
When and who decided to take over my (and I assume many other AT&T subscribers in New York City) cel phone to activate "Flash Flood Warning Emergency Alert" text messages? I know flooding is serious, but they come alarmingly frequently, complete with audio warning signals the likes of which I have not heard since WPIX's "This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test."
3) Something I usually don't like, but this week I actually hate:
That dogs poop and pee on the sidewalks of New York.
Like I say, I usually don't care for it. This week, with the onset of warmer weather and the smells therein, I might be converting to extreme dislike. But what I actually hate is several-fold.
--That the dogs' owners and passers-by watch, intently; it's also bad when the owners look away as if they're unaware that their pet is doing that.
--That the dogs look humiliated.
--That the owners pick up the poop and put it in garbage cans. That's good for sidewalks and shoe soles, I guess, but so what? I'd almost rather risk a poopy pump than having to witness people picking up the poop with their hands, in clear baggies. While in theory that should be more sanitary, it is grosser.
--That garbage collectors pick up the cans o' garbage which contain bags o' poop.
--That the B.O.P.'s (bags o' poop) are exploded by the louder-than-the-emergency-flood-alert-system hydraulic crushers of the Department of Sanitation trucks. Exploding poop.
This is an escalated mental situation for me right now.
The Pooper Scooper Law was passed on August 1st, 1978, during Mayor Ed Koch's administration. It is technically known as The Canine Waste Law, section 161.03 of the New York City Health Code, which states, “A person who owns, possesses or controls a dog, cat or other animal shall not permit the animal to commit a nuisance on a sidewalk of any public place.”
This lady worked tirelessly to legislate said dog poop. Not only did she get the job done, she lived 'til the age of 99. That's 14, in dog years.
Since the LZ Sunday Paper is not made of paper, you cannot use it to paper train or pooper-scoop your pooch.
The LZ Sunday Paper exposes and recirculates news about, and very frequently by, women in business, media, and culture. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven.
