Dear Readers and Subscribers,
Last week's Mother's Day photo edition was a big hit-- glad to hear from so many folks in my inbox and on social media that it was a welcome respite from the usual compendium of clips. The most frequent response was "oddly moving" or "didn't expect to be moved" by the photos. I agree.
This week, however, was a bear and a half to cull. Not only "yesterday's news" but even "last week's news" is still really important and compelling, so it was not to make today's list twice as long.
If you're in town or if you live elsewhere or are headed out and need some media-on-the-go, all of these recommendations fall into the same category as last week's newsletter: Oddly Moving:
'Sponge Bob, The Musical': YES! I'm not kidding. Here's a great profile of the much Emmy-nominated director, Tina Landau
Meg Wolitzer's "The Female Persuasion": Yes -- read this great assessment and then dive into the book.
'Atlanta,' Season 2 but start with Season 1 if you missed it last year. It's on Hulu. I loved this piece about the only woman in the writer's room.
Also, if you haven't actually watched Donald Glover/Childish Gambino's "This Is America," do it!
Then watch "This Is (Women's) America" and see if you agree/disagree with the incredible backlash that the creator got.
I watched 'Jules et Jim which' I haven't seen for about 30 years. What a radical, extreme, bizarre movie. The phrase 'love triangle' doesn't even begin to cover it. I had completely forgotten that there's a song in the middle of it. Maybe part of its outsized effect on me was watching it on a long plane ride in the middle of the night, only a day after a long plane ride in the beginning of the night before. Maybe it's because Jeanne Moreau, under Truffaut's direction here, is absurdly, inordinately compelling.
Well, like I always say, come here each week for high and low culture, not much in between. All the news by and about women in the news: Politics, Business, Sports, the Arts.
