Dear Readers,
I don't think I've ever gotten a better text than this one:
Yeah. My wallet -- on the 'floor' of Houston Street actually meaning the "street" of Houston Street. Right. Full of cash, credit cards, driver's license, my Global Entry card, Euros, a sizable credit for Ralph Lauren, my lucky baseball card, and couple of other things…
My simple story is that my phone rang, but the number was unfamiliar. I will use any excuse not to answer my phone and I had plenty. It was cold. I was late. I was locking up my Citibike.
I didn't answer it.
I hurried down the block to get where I was going. I actually saw this text only as I listened to a voicemail that the good samaritan had left. I called her back, made the plan, and about 40 seconds later I met her on the corner of said Thompson & Houston Streets.
She lived in one of the only modest buildings on the block. She had lived there for 20+ years. When she found the wallet she had somehow assumed that it belonged to someone in her building, as it was directly in front of her front door, so she took it upstairs. She looked inside and said she didn't recognize the name (I didn't think to ask if she really knows every single person in her building!) and set out finding my phone number. Which is actually pretty hard. How do you find someone's phone number? She didn't look very sleuthy to me. But not only was this lady a) honest and b) a good detective, she absolutely, positively refused any type of reward or compensation. Not "no, no, no I just couldn't" that actually means "yes, yes, yes I deserve more," but like a genuine un-understanding as to why doing something completely normal like returning what doesn't belong to you would deserve a bounty. The whole thing amazed me.
Why did my wallet fall out onto the middle of a busy New York City street? Because I was Citibiking? I was, but that's not why, exactly. (Oh and yes I wear a helmet, all the time). It was because sometimes I try to imagine how some people, generally (okay, always) men, walk out of their house or work without a bag. A handbag. A purse. A totebag. Any receptacle whatsoever. Every day, all day, going from home to office and place to place: where is the stuff that they need? Forget about make-up, I mean basics! Let's just start with keys/phone/wallet. Glasses. Sunglasses. It's freezing, maybe a pack of tissues?
Well, that day was one of those days where I was like "I'm just going from here to there. I don't need the world with me. I will put my wallet/phone/keys in my pocket and I will go." And I did. And then I lost my wallet because of course it fell out of my pocket on Houston & Thompson Streets and an incredibly honest person found and returned it.
Moral of story-- I am taking the purse/bag/tote for the foreseeable future. The mystery of how and where all that stuff gets stored, whether in pleat-front Dockers or an Armani suit, is unsolved. Though if you are considering going that route, here is a handy primer on the new-fangled Unisex clothing idea, apparently now termed "Ungendered." Further adding to the overall mystery of life, I am now thinking constantly about what, in my wallet, has my phone number on it and how I would possibly look up someone's cel phone if I need to.
In my spare time, I have found a ton of important news by and about women in business, politics, digital, media, film, tv, fashion, sports, literature and general pop culture for you.
