Planes.
This week, I was going to write two different things about air travel. Linked In had asked its "Influencers" to write about business travel experiences, as part of their monthly themed series about common business issues and practices. I wrote the column and submitted it. Also, I had been planning to write this short Sunday Paper note about my last plane trip of the summer. Just as I was taking off to return to New York City from Dallas on Thursday, I saw news of the Malaysian Airlines crash.
Linked In (appropriately) quickly sent a note to say that they will not be publishing the posts for a while, if at all. And I no longer had anything the least bit interesting or witty to say about my trip which consisted of, like it does for everyone, crowds, bad seat neighbors, bad Muzak, bad nuts, (way) tmi from my pilot, etc. Pedestrian. Irrelevant.
I am sad about the Malaysia flight, as everyone is. I am feeling extra sad because in my early 20's, which is a pretty long time ago now, a friend was killed in the Pan Am 103 bombing. It must not have been the first air disaster of its kind but to us, and of course to his family, it was shocking and unheard of. Some years later, my cousin and his family, along with the all the other passengers and crew, perished in the plane that had just departed Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, and crashed into the Red Sea. And of course, 9/11. Everyone knew someone, or someone who knew someone. I'm sorry for all of it, for everyone who's lost someone.
To the newer readers of The Sunday Paper-- this publication is not usually so much of a downer. But reality is reality and it seems cruel and strange not to acknowledge this terrible event. There are, though, pretty awful events happening all the time. I guess I'm inconsistent about what to touch on and what to leave to the news media to cover. Also sadly, and for the second consecutive week, The Pic(k) Of The Week is an obit, albeit one about an energetic, lovely woman who lived a helluva life, and a long one and that. All of that said, you will likely still have a good laugh this week, which is always a goal, somewhere in the weekly news detritus digest that is The Sunday Paper.
I'll say one more thing about plane travel. Thinking so much about planes, and mercifully being on a safe one on Thursday, it brought to my mind that a few years ago I spent a good bit of time recording the gender & race of first class air travel, as I experienced it. For five years, every time I flew first class, which was pretty often, I noted, unscientifically but as best I could, the number of women, african americans, asian americans, hispanics, and international travellers. This took a good bit of aural and visual observation-ing. Put another way, it was gender and racial profiling at its most benign. Five years. Every trip. I crunched the numbers in my Excel spreadsheet that I kept. I wrote a piece for The Daily Beast. I hadn't looked at it since then, 'til today. It is interesting for me to note that the themes of the article are exactly the themes of this newsletter. It appears that in this regard I am very consistent.
Somewhat consistently, every week The LZSundayPaper exposes and recirculates news about, and very frequently by, women in business, media, and culture. The "culture" part comes in many forms. Ours specializes in high and low, though sometimes we meet in the middle. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven.
For the uninitiated or maybe even for those veterans who thought this was a pretty random-yet-interesting list of stuff, take note: the clips progress in a roughly consistent progression: from general business news, through digital & entrepreneurship, on to media, arts & entertainment, usually a dash of sports, literature, and on to the fun-est stuff.
Don't forget to send us interesting stuff you think we may have missed, and tell people you think will enjoy it to sign up at LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
Not yet a slave to social media, but inching towards slavishness, The LZSP has a new Twitter Handle. Follow it/me/us @LZSundayPaper
Enjoy!
