Dear Readers,
Last week, I was so focused on getting the message out for early voting that I ran my LZ Sunday Voter masthead. In retrospect, it seems that at my one-woman weekly editorial meeting last Saturday none of my personalities brought up the fact that yesterday was Halloween. So, apologies for the tardy expression of my editorial calendar. Better the next day than never. I hope you enjoyed the full moon and a spooky, if Covid-safe, Halloween.
Speaking of being focused on voting to the exclusion of real life, yes, I voted! Wednesday evening I trekked in from the deepening refrigeration of our 100% un-insulated beach house. At about 6pm, I went to our early voting polling site in Manhattan and saw… a line. I was on Washington Square South, around the corner from the entrance to our polling sit on La Guardia Place. So, unable to see that entrance, I specifically asked the two young women in front of me, "are you in line to vote?" and I heard a distinct "yes, we are."
Then, I texted my son to come over to vote with me after his work ended. He came about ten minutes later. The long-ish line had inched its way towards the corner but we were still a ways away from even rounding the corner. He approached me and said, "Hi! Why are you standing in line for a vending machine?"
Okay. So…yes, in fact I was in line for a vending machine. Sitting on the corner of LaGuardia Place and Washington Square Park South, the heart of NYU country, was a marketing event. The theory, I guess, is something like "young people don't vote. What will make them vote? I know….FREE ICE CREAM!" Yes, this was a vending machine dispensing this vegan ice cream. Adding to the confusion was the fact that two folks standing on that corner appeared to be poll workers. Curve ball: one was, in fact, a poll-worker. However, rather than directing people to the poll entrance 50 feet down the block in the other direction, he was watching folks line up in a vending machine line. The other was an "event marketing" employee for said ice cream brand. She had a lot of work to do because the vending machine was so strangely designed and the choosing of which ice cream you wanted took so long that each (free) ice cream transaction took longer than tourists figuring out how to navigate a Metrocard kiosk in the Times Square Subway Station.
When my son alerted me to the Okay, Boomer situation I had put myself in, we had only one person between us and the free ice cream. so we toughed it out another 5 or so minutes and got our two ice creams. Then, we walked around the corner and marched straight in to a zero-line, well-staffed polling place. We signed in, got our ballots, bubbled the ballot (both sides!), scanned the ballots, and proudly got our "I Voted" stickers and went merrily on our way. The only thing about the voting process that was difficult was juggling the freezing, stick-to-your-fingers cold, ice cream packages while we were doing all of the above.
Note to the "Get Out The Vote" campaign designers: Free Ice Cream is a great idea, even in late October.
Note to self-- Self, you broke one of the cardinal rules of your life--never get in a line without asking at least twice what it's for. Twice, because as this incident exemplifies, people say strange and untrue things and/or they don't understand the question I'm asking and/or I don't hear them correctly. Well, I got off easy this time. I was up two ice creams and the whole thing apparently still took less time than others' waiting time to vote, sans ice cream treats.
Consider a Sunday pint (or in liquid form, if you prefer) right now, to settle in to read the most important news of the week about women in politics, business, the arts, fashion, sports and pop culture. Guaranteed discovery of something you didn't know before. Discover, amplify, and share a voice you hadn't heard before. Have a laugh.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
