Dearest Readers,
Welcome, new subscribers!
I am very grateful to my friend Jules Pieri who runs a very cool site where you can buy lots of amazing products that she and her team hand-curate. She also writes an important and well-read blog.
This week, I noticed some notifications in my trusty Mailchimp app that I had loads of new subscribers. (Well, it's *not* actually a trusty app. You might agree with when you click on links that are broken or you don't actually ever get this email because the spam filters are unmanageable). My subscribers go up by a few-to-a-bunch every week. They also go down by a couple-to-a-few every week. Yes, it can be painful when I see friends and family flee. I try not to take it personally. I am a fan of Mission: Inbox Zero and I understand the impetus to get there by any means necessary. The net-net, as we say, has been very positive for the years since I've started. But this was a big week in the annals of the LZSP.
When that happens from time to time, I usually find that someone with a large following has linked to me through one of their social media feeds. In this case, it was through Jules' blog entry, which is a Sunday Paper-worthy entry on its own. Please click on it--it is worth reading. I found it quite moving, and practical, and I think you will want to share it with many people, especially Dads. Thank you again, Jules, for the very positive, generous shout out!
If you want to seek some respite from another exhausting news-cycle week, here's a quick take on my bedside/living room/on-the-move content consumption update:
What I'm watching:
Call My Agent (warning: French with Subtitles, Netflix)
What all Millenials (and me, too) are watching: Maniac (warning: Stranger-Things-esque but different)
What I'm reading:
'Jimmy Neurosis' by James Oseland (warning: an old friend from Top Chef: Masters, this book is not about his exceptionally successful career at Saveur and on Top Chef, but rather a harrowing and moving memoir about his punk-rock days and, mostly, his mom)
'I'll Be There For You': The One About "Friends" (warning: Though I had nothing to do with the series and did not watch a single episode in its decade-long first run, I am quoted a few times in this history of the TV show. And, amazingly, I just ran into Jennifer Aniston last week in L.A.! And I can share with you that we had an exceptionally warm 8-11 second conversation in the dining room of our favorite restaurant in L.A.
What I (and the rest of the country) saw this week:
Yes -- the new 'A Star Is Born.' (warning: (especially to you new subscribers who might be about to think "what the hell is this name-dropping ass-hat doing?") Speaking of L.A., I also ran into old friend in L.A. in the very same restaurant who just happens to be the producer of -- yes, the 'A Star Is Born.' I only bring it up because a) L.A. is nuts and famous people really are all around the town all the time. b) yes you must see the film. c) yes, he was elated and happy and grateful for the enormous success critically and commercially, but more because he reminded me that he started working on this film in 2007. It fell apart more times, with more people attached and unattached, than he could count. It was a miracle it got made this time. Which is how, in my experience, every movie feels. Which is why only crazy people do that for a living and why I am happy to be close to it again in my career now. Crazy + emotionally/artistically driven, hoping for some dough = Fun Work. Sometimes.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
