Readers,
A Renaissance Man is loosely defined as a person (okay, man) of many talents or areas of knowledge.
Today's business and entertainment-focussed Renaissance Men (and yes, Women) have a panoply of entertainment-y/digital-y/tv-y places to go, things to do and fellow Renaissance Men to keep up with in the month of January, 2016. The first weeks of the year might take him to CES, The Golden Globes, NATPE, Davos, and Sundance (plus the Superbowl, stretching a busy first month to the first Sunday in February).
About a half-a-millenium ago, our Man was probably thinking he was already stretched to the max, getting used to all the bright colors in oil paintings after those gloomy Middle Ages and wondering whether the recent invention of moveable type was going to ultimately depress him because of all the New Yorkers that would stack up on his night-table.
Everyone (including me) complains about the time-suck and general discombobulation caused by the confluence of these January business events. I think it's especially keenly felt because, over time, the one slow month of the year has been completely appropriated, usurped.
I am lucky to have been invited to all of these events and conventions, over the years. I only regret that I never made it to Davos, (probably rightly) thinking that I should not sacrifice the travel time that would take me away from (real) work and family.
Corporate America underwrites billions of dollars in travel, hotel, entertainment, and badge fees. Sometimes I still wonder what the point of going is. But when I do manage to get to them, and pack the days and nights with meetings and catch-ups and presentations, it is reconfirmed that they hold value and mostly make sense. The sheer size, though, has gotten a little confounding. For CES, the estimate was 150,000 attendees, which was revised upward to 170,000 when badges and hotel rooms were counted. That seems like a lot. Even more amazing is that walking into any hotel, at any party, or on the Convention Center floor itself, it feels like a party where you know at least half the guests. Which of course is not true or even possible. Maybe it's that in a sea of strangers, anyone who is a friend, or a work-mate, or even a little bit familiar stands out.
Maybe my favorite meeting of CES was with a very contemporary Renaissance-ish man. In real life he is a super-smart media-y banker/investor/powerbroker. He referenced the Shelley poem 'Ozymandias', the debate around charter schools, and Vice in equal measure. We were in the kray of the not-authentically-classy-or-even-nominally Italian Bellagio Hotel so it is fitting that all things Renaissance, faux and real, came home to roost.

We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes in size high, medium, and low. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect at least one good laugh.
