Dear Readers,
Thank you, subscribers and collective internet, for setting me straight on my Postal Service suggestion journey/rant of last week.
Honestly, scores of people let me know that this service already exists. For those who sent notes and scans of their mail, thank you. Yes, the United States Post Office already *does* scan each and every piece of your mail before delivering it to you (depending on your zip code, apparently, but honestly it seems like most of the country).
Before I get all snarky and tell you the many essential things that the service *doesn't* do, let me honestly say that my subscribers (and, sort of, the collective internet) never cease to amaze me. Folks are very generous, sharing stories--some very personal--of how they do things, use things, and why it matters. So while I was busy thinking that this service is near 100% not useful (and that was being nice about it), others said that it's incredibly useful to them for a variety of reasons. Maybe because they use a PO Box 20 miles from their home and in bad weather they save themselves the trip unless they actually need to pick something up; because they use their own email address for the daily notification for their aging parent's mail, to make sure that their health insurance renewal or social security check has arrived on time; maybe because they themselves really need the paycheck and if they see it isn't arriving on the day it's supposed to, they call their employer and ask where it is; because they live in a house or un-doorman-ed apartment building and see that a package is going to be delivered and want to be home for it, because many other packages have been stolen.
So while I don't find the service particularly useful insofar as seeing all my junk mail and occasional jury duty summons (which only makes me more anxious in advance of getting home to my pile of useless or annoying mail), it is very worthwhile for many. Thank you, USPS!
Also, I didn't know you could order stamps or schedule a pick-up of a package. That is very handy, although I am guessing that few in our Civil Service corps see the irony of charging a *delivery fee* for delivering stamps ordered online. Get it? they're already making a delivery…of my mail! So I don't know, there are certainly efficiencies to be reckoned with. BTW I have already sent these fabulous stamps as a Mother's Day gift-- I love them! And I learned a lot. And of course there are lots more to choose from, if for instance Scooby-Doo or George Bush is more you or your Mom's style.
I am proud that I have another week of on-time delivery for you, scouring the internet to curate the most important news of the week for women in business, politics, media, digital, technology, the arts, sports, and pop culture, straight to your virtual doorstep, every Sunday morning. The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
