Dear Readers,
A political edition of the handy dandy LZ Sunday Paper Pronunciation Guide:
Soon-to-be Chief Of Staff Reince Priebus.
His actual name is Rheinhold Richard Priebus. Rheinhold, while unusual, is not difficult to pronounce. Rheinhold, and Priebus for that matter, potentially could have been made fun of in the schoolyard, so maybe adding a soupçon of unpronouncablilty was a distraction tactic from the teasing potential.
Professionally funny folks such as Samantha Bee and Stephen Colbert do a good job on Reince Priebus anagrams. Hint: the name contains the letters P, N, I, S, and E. The surgically inclined former presidential candidate Ben Carson does an 8th grade boy's job of somehow mis-pronouncing his last name. Great GIF potential, if you agree with me that pubis is a funny word in any context.
So, how do you say Reince Priebus? From the horse's mouth.
"Reince." Rhymes with Pints. Or Heinz, the ketchup, if it was spelled Heintz.
"Priebus." Sounds like the car model Prius, if they came out with a model called Pribus. It rhymes exactly with the word "rebus," which is not the name of Reba McIntyre's vehicular brother but rather one of those pictogram puzzles. For instance if you made a rebus out of the word "eyeball" you would be a picture of an eye + a picture of a ball.
Bonus Historical Sidenote: A long time ago at VH1 in the late '90's, the very clever creators of Pop-Up Video pitched an entire show that told the story of musical artists, music news, really anything at all, using pictograms. We did a pilot and it turned out that actually getting legal permission for the thousands of fleeting images that comprised each minute of the program was a bit cost prohibitive. We had great rebus' for famous artists like The Beatles, Prince, Bread, and The Rolling Stones, as well as newer icons like Madonna. Perhaps my favorite was for Hootie and The Blowfish. We might have found our way around the cost issues, but it turned out that many artists, including Seal, didn't appreciate our sense of creativity and humor. I personally would have liked having a story about me told using pictures like this.
Next political pronunciation candidate: Steve Mnuchin.
You will both learn how to say it and most definitely learn how not to say it by watching the erroneously titled "Steve Munchkin" video here.
By the way, if you want to say that talking about making fun of people's names is not something that a person named Zalaznick should do, you'd be right!
Today's edition of The LZ Sunday Paper is chock full of news about and by women in business, politics, media, the arts and pop culture, hand-picked by me, for you. 'Tis almost the season to be jolly which means you're probably getting ready to be depressed! So hopefully there's something to laugh about, too.
