To all the Mothers, and of course to all children of Mothers,
My own Mother taught me many things that, over time, I have thought about quite a bit. I'm sure it's the same for you. I learned from my mother that Mother's Day is kind of nice but kind of dumb. A made up holiday to sell greeting cards and charge triple for brunch and roses. But also a (yes, made up) holiday that encourages folks (husbands and kids, presumably) to take one day out of the year to celebrate the person who, whether working inside or outside the home, is doing their darnedest every darn day. My Mom always countered that sentiment with the philosophy that, however nice an idea that is, a mother and her role is a person who should be appreciated every day. Part of it is that she, in turn, celebrated being a mother a whole lot more than once a year. I have always kind of seen it that way, too.
This is at the fabulous Boca Raton Hotel & Club, c.1970.
I don't know if "enjoyed" is the right word for my three maternal deliveries, and I don't know if "enjoy" is even the right word for how I feel about delivering this newsletter every week. Both delivery experiences share some attributes such as a great deal of labor, wishing for an anesthetic, snapping at people until I get done with it, wondering if I'l ever do it again; ultimately, immense satisfaction and lots of positive feedback! So here is another edition of a bouncing baby newsletter, crying out with the most important news of the week for women in business, politics, the arts and culture, always with something to leave you with mouth agape, in laughter or in shock. I think it would rate very highly on the newsletter Apgar scale. Which happened to be invented by Virginia Apgar, who, in 1949, was the first woman to become a full professor at Columbia Medical School, after graduating 4th in her class in 1933.

Looking forward to visiting many airport lounges this week…somehow nowhere I'm flying has a direct flight so wish me luck on my connections for my 6 flights!
Have a very happy day, may you be a parent or not.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
