Dear Readers,
I might have to write that book after all.
It would be just to have the chance to share two doozies, of the 'splaining variety. Both occurred this past week. Both could be categorized as some kind of combination of "just trying to help," "hey I would act that way towards anyone," "it's just the polite thing to do," and/or "I'm of a certain age/culture, it's what we do." I can't mask the situations enough to tell them here. Neither are in any way prurient. One was a social setting and one was a business setting. They are insignificant compared to sexual harassment or abuse. But microaggressions are real, though for many they are hard to understand, and which makes them even harder to articulate the offensiveness of. I would say one of these was micro and one was actually a macro-aggression. When I think about them after the fact, the burn continues to increase. In my experience that is a sign of having suppressed a reaction at the time of the occurrence or having reacted appropriately but having been dismissed. Both are true in these cases. On that note…
…on to the Oscars!
Here are my predictions. I will try to score myself and remember to post here (honestly) next week:
Picture: Green Book
Director: Alphonso Cuaron (actually I don't think so) Spike Lee.
Actor: Rami Malek
Actress: Glenn Close
Supporting Actor: Sam Elliott. No, Mahershala Ali. Oooh I don’t know. He won’t win but Sam Rockwell was so ridiculously good as George Bush in Vice.
Supporting Actress: Regina King
Original Screenplay: Roma (again no, I don't think so. Not enough words for the Oscar voters to consider it a screenplay? So The Favourite. Words about royal people. Winner.
Adapted Screenplay: A Star Is Born
Foreign Language Film: Roma
Film Editing: Whichever film has the longest running time. I think, historically, the Academy believes that the "most" edits is the "best edited."
Make-up & Hair: related issue-- probably Vice, because it has the most make-up for the baldcap that is Dick Cheney in the film.
Any Sound award-- Roma-- ironically, has the least sounds playing the biggest role. The 20 million dollars Netflix spent to market it has to land something.
Documentary: RBG -- go, (my pal!) director Betsy West!!!
Now I'm so bored already I can't even finish filling out the poll, and it's only been a few minutes. That is why I wonder if the ratings tonight will be as low as they seem like they're going to be for the host-less affair de l'Oscar? J'accuse! the show of being deathly boring and the Academy making every kind of mistake as they try to fix it.
I hope you have seen lots of the movies, though. Some of them are really, really good. If you watched all 5 documentary features you would have seen 5 amazing movies that deserve your thought and attention. And Roma. Also, now that movies don't actually play in movie theaters any more, you have no excuse. Netflix (or Amazon or whatever) your ass over to the sofa and watch them!
I hope your butt also enjoys this week's news which, like every other week, showcases the most important items by and about women in business, politics, the arts and pop culture. The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
