Dear Readers,
Some great content to take your mind off other topics, perhaps by focusing on some other intense and/or intensely funny stories:
Thank You and Goodnight. Worth the mini-subscription to The Criterion Channel, the best under-the-rader subscription service out there. This film is Jan Oxenberg's 1992 documentary feature about her grandmother's death. About her own life as a young woman. About her own mother and each of their relationships. About the loss of her sister. It is ultra-real but also fantastical, uncomfortable, and weird. The interview with Jan about the film is one of the only "dvd extras" that is truly worthwhile, riveting in fact.
Okay I guess now that we're down the cemetary path, I also highly recommend a second film about a loved one's death, audaciously combining documentary and scripted, or rather fantasy-based, scenes. I don't know if it's a direct homage to 'Thank You and Goodnight,' but seeing them so close together I found definite connectivity. Dick Johnson Is Dead, on Netflix, is also directed by a woman, Kirsten Johnson, who incidentally or no so incidentally also came out later in life and went on to cinematically explore the deep connection between love and death, grieving, and what to talk about while we're all still here.
Well now to complete the trifecta of moribundity, here's a literal classic of the genre, a documentary that couldn't be scripted because noone would believe how loopy and actually shocking the story was. I can't believe it but I had never seen Grey Gardens in its entirety. This also completes the Trifecta of streaming services, because you need to go over to HBO Max for this one. It's risky to even watch the trailer due to overwhelming crazy-making both of the subjects and how I felt after seeing it.
Onto the last pick which might actually even be my first pick-- a brand new film, finally!, not about death. 'The 40-Year-Old Version', on Netflix, is indeed a blending of fact and fiction, though, like the other films. The writer/director/star is a real person whose character is an awful lot like the real person. Radha Blank is that person, and she won Sundance this year. It's like a coming of age film for >40-year olds. The film is so moving to me and made me laugh like crazy. After you see it, read this.

We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh.
