Dear folks,
Long time readers know my trials and tribulations with MailChimp, the service that formats and sends out this newsletter in bulk and is the unlikeliest of hip, meme-worthy NPR sponsors. Last week, the newsletter hit a record number of Spam filters. Particularly Gmail, and many Corporate servers. Apologies to those who had to go retrieve it, find it on Facebook or Twitter. And thanks to the scores of you who noticed it was missing and let me know.
This week, I cannot open with my usual "greetings" with an exclamation point, or even a capitalized "hello," or anything enthusiastic at all. Apparently, these are the same sorts of salutations and punctuations that are used by stranded Nigerian princes in need, salespersons who in fact are NOT looking to take anything from you except the password to your bank account password, and other nefarious phisherman.
Many tech-oriented readers gave me their anti-spam-technique tips, or just commiserated about the state of their own newsletter deliveries.
Then, I got serious, and had an on-line "chat" with my pals at Mailchimp.
If you haven't tried it, whether with Zappos, American Airlines, or any other vendor, on-line chat is a superb customer service innovation. No hold music. Much harder to be inadvertently disconnected. And it seems easier to ask questions and get better answers.
Going deep Mailchimp was interesting. They are interfacing with their developers in real time. The first insight was that their coders think there is a "conflict" with the "social blocks" in the newsletter. That's these:
That's annoying, because most people in the newsletter business actually find it very important for people to share it!
They also suggested that I look at lots of help pages and tutorials like this one. Honestly don't even waste a click on it. It says things like this:
Just recently I let you folks know that I was pretty proud about my English Major skills coming into play at work when the sudden need to "deconstruct" something had just arisen. But this is a stark reminder as to why everyone is supposed to start learning to code. College is good, but it seems so important there must be a way of starting the process in utero.
So I'm a little deflated, wondering if anyone is actually going to receive this. Also because it's time to say so long to summer. Boo x2.
Here's hoping that The LZ Sunday Paper comes through loud and clear. Lots of good stuff this week. Politics, Business, Tech, Digital, The Arts and Pop Culture--it's all here for you. If it does get to you, please Tweet it, share it on Facebook, or Forward it to a Friend without the aid of Mailchimp's faulty sharing tools. (BTW the techs and support folks at Mailchimp are REALLY NICE and they are probably very stressed that this is happening: Thank you to Hawk (cool name!), Tom (who I somehow hung up with but he seemed helpful) and Dorothy (gave me alot of support and many tutorials I couldn't follow).
Everything you dear readers send me seems to get to me just fine, when you email me here.
Do peruse the back catalogue for the issues you missed, forward the Paper, or sign up at LZSundayPaper.com.
Sometimes there's so much interesting stuff out there I can't wait 'til Sunday so I tweet it during the week. Follow me @LZSundayPaper.
Have a nice long weekend,
LZ

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ (soon to be registered trademarked and copyrighted) launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes in size high, medium, and low. Our audience for this content is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
