Dear Readers,
Happy Birthday to William Shakespeare!
"From women's eyes this doctrine I derive:
They sparkle still the right Promethean fire;
They are the books, the arts, the academes,
That show, contain, and nourish all the world."
—Berowne in Love's Labor's Lost
I would like to be able to say that I pulled this quote from my mental arsenal of heady literary quotes-at-the-ready. But instead I confess that I came across it in this handy-dandy BuzzFeed guide to great Shakespeare quotes, which they published on his birthday, two years ago.
Also I would like to be able to say that Shakespeare was a woman, and thus made sense as the focus for this LZ Sunday Paper editorial note. But there is no evidence that he was anything but a Bro-Bard. Plenty of people have studied his work from a feminist perspective, both in the academic and theater worlds. If you are in the Northeast U.S. you can see a distinctly female take on the play quoted above, in this terrific production.
If we're going to talk about Theater and women, why don't you say Hello! to your second mortgage, which is what you'll need to pay the scalpers or StubHub to see Hello, Dolly!
Or, try to see the Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat, written by Lynn Nottage, who happens to be, I believe, the only woman ever to have won two Pulitzers.
Finally, consider seeing this show. You will be surprised how much you can realize from the vantage point of A Box Of One's Own.
The LZ Sunday Paper is drama-free. And also actually free. So enjoy it and share…freely. It's your weekly, must-read digest of news hand-picked by me, about and by women in business, politics, media, the arts and pop culture. There is a load of tragedy, and usually some comedy, every week.
Send me stuff you think should go in a future edition here. Thank you Julie, Emily, David, Steven, Barbara, Elyse, Gloria, Miriam, and others, for this week's offerings.
You can follow me on Twitter or on Insta @LZSundayPaper
When things are looking down, you can get a shared perspective @LZFloors.
See you next week. We'll be getting closer to "More matter for a May morning"** soon thereafter.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
