Hi, Folks,
Happy June!
Tired of being tired of politics?
Too bad. It's non-stop and it's going to stay that way. Though I am tired of it, too, I'm also tired of hearing about people being tired of it.
I don't have too much advice to give. Except that it seems like it's a good idea not to wait until the next election to figure out what you want to do to about things. Get some practice. Donate? Figure out if you want to give time or money or both. Feel like shouting? Call your congressperson, sign e-petitions or show up at demonstrations. Overwhelmed? Maybe start by picking a specific issue you care about, find an organization associated with it that you trust, and see what they are looking for. Or think about your network-- most everybody has a friend or work acquaintance who seems better equipped to organize or be involved? To start, ask them what you can join up with and branch out from there.
I prefer good old fashioned celebrity distractions such as weddings, affairs, divorces, and fashion mis-steps. This week, however, we had tiresome and distracting idiocies of both Kathy Griffin and Bill Maher. Kathy got the brunt of the backlash. She had a show and did a bunch of comedy specials which ran on Bravo for years. Though we won two Emmy Awards, the attention-getting comedy was often cause for concern. This time, she was not only fired from a good gig but got additionally hammered because she changed apology strategy mid-stream. She at first apologized 100%, which could have worked, following the pattern of people doing stupid and offensive things but then owning up to them and convincing people they are sorry. But then she not-apologized by positing a conspiracy theory that left her vulnerable to even more vitriol.
Though the crisis is thoroughly of her own making, I haven't seen much mention of the conceiver, stager and photographer of the beheading image, Tyler Shields. He has long devised somewhat gruesome art. He recently published a book and launched a show that went up in L.A. called Provocateur. Anyway, so far he gets off scot free. As does Bill Maher, who has insulted and mocked Muslims, LGBT people, and now African Americans. But he apologized and folks are apparently ready to move on.
Maybe next week we can, too. Perhaps we'll talk about daisies and rainbows.
In the meantime, send me stuff you think should go in next week's edition here.

The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
