Hi, Folks--
A friend of mine, who is an author and journalist, sent me a poem yesterday. She is a smart, elegantly intellectual person. An accomplished journalist and author, Joyce Purnick was the first female editor of The Metro Section of the New York Times. The poem was written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 2007, when he was a mere 88 and George Bush II was president. Let's think back on that era which today seems so mild and reasonable. In fact, at the time, it seemed so dire--a deeply partisan, nationalistic era, we in the midst of a war based on a phony rationale--as to evoke a poem like this. "Pity The Nation" is what I would term a high-class, plaintive screed, perfect to sum up this week's/year's low-class shenanigans.
By the way, let's all plan to wish Ferlinghetti a Happy 100th Birthday on March 24th, 2019!
Another friend of mine is a dynamic, curious, top-notch attorney who is also an entrepreneur and all-around energetic thinker. Kris had another take on how to reflect on this week's discourses:
Is it a coincidence that a wonderful woman chose to share a poem with a friend while a wonderful man chose to text-curse with a friend? Both modes of communication work for me. The brain of an English major competes with the soul of direct, unembellished emotion every minute of every day. That's why we all have different kinds of friends to help us through it all. Whichever way you might choose to express yourself or get support, I encourage you to do so.
Here is a compendium of how many have chosen to express themselves this week. Read the most important news items by and about women in business, politics, and the best of pop culture. The LZ Sunday Paperâ„¢ launched at the dawn of 2014. We expose and recirculate interesting content that is about, and frequently by, women in business, with a dose of ultra-relevant culture. We think that culture comes high and low, not much in between. Our audience is vast and not gender-driven. Every week we expect to deliver at least one good laugh. Send suggestions, clips, or names of people you think might enjoy this to LZSundayPaper@gmail.com.
