The "Blinking Yellow" Edition
Dear Subscribers,
Screens Round-Up:
Big Screen:
Barbie: Run, Don’t Walk. A rollicking good time. Don’t make a mistake and say you don’t know if you really want to see it or it’s just not for you. It’s for you. I beach. Low key winner: America Ferrara.
Even Bigger Screen/70MM Oppenheimer: Run, Don’t Walk…except in this case, run away from the direction of the movie theater. Before you Nolan fans nuke my inbox, I’m a fan! Dunkirk! Interstellar! I get it. Just not this one. Other smarties agree: “Oppenheimer” Is Ultimately a History Channel Movie with Fancy Editing. And btw no offense to History Channel movies!!
Theater stage, but with a lot of video screens:
Here Lies Love: —David Byrne/Fatboy Slim Musical about the Marcos’ Innocent-ish Rise and Subsequent Reign of Terror: Proceed with caution. Yes, innovative. Yes, I’m a fan of all the creators. Yes, you go, Public Theater, for bringing new ideas and voices and casting to life.
Yet, I don’t know how I feel about being herded around a mosh pit doing line dances and “hands in the air” celebrations of the dictator and his wife, albeit we were feeling sorry for Imelda because she was poor and spurned by her first boyfriend who she later had assassinated? Also, critics are lauding the production for staying away from the shoe narrative. But I disagree. Shoes!
Small Screen:
The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem. Wildly popular Netflix series which, despite the title, is not a reality show. Rather, it is a historical (albeit some would say completely a-historical) family drama from the end of the Ottoman Empire to the beginnings of WWII (I’m only in season one). Starring the light-eyed sybaritic hunk from Schtissel in… a light-eyed sybaritic hunk role. Go figure. I am two eps in and agree that “It has more to say about halvah than the impending Holocaust,” yet I will continue to watch.
Beef: One episode in. People are loving Beef! I am wondering about Beef. But I will continue on the Beef journey for a few more eps because people really love BEEF!
Scoreboard Screen:
For the many of you who have inquired as to the upshot of last week’s mixed doubles tennis tourney narrative— our results were…mixed! No, we did really well— we got to the semi-finals!, losing to the ultimate tourney champions. Kudos to you, Champions! And thanks again to my first-time-ever partner. Way to inspire confidence and have fun doing it!
I hope I’ve inspired some confidence in you, dear readers, to forge ahead and read on whatever screen is in front of you all the most important news of the week about women in politics, business, the arts, fashion, sports and pop culture. Have fun and enjoy the show.
Thank you to so many subscribers for sending me pieces from great, fresh and diverse sources. Keep sending me anything you think I need to see right here.
