The "Hazy" Edition
Dear Readers,
This edition is extra hazy, like the New York City sky last week. Yes, the sky was super-strange. But honestly I was a little out of step with the rest of the world. I just didn’t register it as cockamamie as everyone else did. Like yes of course it was very weird— the sky was cloudy but it wasn’t going to rain. Also the clouds were yellow. So I get it. Weird. But maybe it’s extra sad that it didn’t strike me as *that* weird. I’ve been in fire season lots of times in LA— really bad! I’ve been in Beijing in August—really bad! Plus there the local paper says the sky is blue every day so the gaslighting of Communism is worse than the smoke. Plus I’ve been…in New York City in the ‘70’s! The sky was yellow all the time and people made fun of New Jersey smog and we had “smog alerts” and everyone was smoking anyway, inside cars, restaurants and airplanes so who compared to that playing outside in the smog was better! Also (possibly) sad— maybe alarming— I was kind of happy to put my mask back on. It was comforting in that old “what else am I gonna do?” covid-y way.
Actually, this edition is coming out extra kray!
I think it’s kind of even weirder that NYC hasn’t had even a whisper of early summer. Which I’m sort of grateful for because those are the days that people’s smalltalk is exclusively comprised of phrases such as “It just goes from winter to summer! No Spring this year!” Well, not true this time. Enjoy your cotton sweaters and linen pants before the temps (and hazardous smoke conditions) rise.
And enjoy this edition of The LZ Sunday Paper— a hazy, smoky, low-hanging ceiling of the week’s most important news by, for, and about women in politics, business, law, science, sports, the arts and pop culture.
Happy Pride!
And enjoy your tie- and after-shave shopping for the father-figure in your life for next Sunday.
