The "Incomplete" Edition
MDear All,
A hodgepodge arts & pop culture round-up.
FILM: Civil War — I loved it. An actual film, written and directed with an actual vision. Tense. Real tense. Apparently there are people who are annoyed that the plot is not explicit and you don’t know what “side” anyone’s on. Um…this film is a very “big” film but it’s not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so no, you don’t know *exactly* because people aren’t saying it *exactly* before, during, and after they do things on screen?
Other film to see: There Is No Evil. By the same director as Drive My Car. Also tense. Extremely atmospheric. If you’ve been to and/or love all things Japan, first see Drive My Car, then this, then the new Wim Wenders film Perfect Days.
If you live in NYC or are planning your summer City trip:
BALLET: Can you hurry to New York City and see the new (and repetoire) ballets by Justin Peck (chief choreographer and artistic director) and Amy Hall Garner? We saw them on a program with ultra awesome traditional Balanchine. Truly new yet relatable. Completely elevated. Parts of it absolutely amazing.
Justin Peck-related THEATER: He choreographed a moving and kind of important play to the music of Sufjan Stevens, Illinoise. In a million years I wouldn’t bet I’d love a coming of age story, treatise on love & death in the form of a “narrative dance” musical, but it sure works.
Other theater: I was riveted by Jessica Lange in The Mother Play. I was not so riveted but others absolutely love Patriots. others seem to love but me, not so much — but worth seeing. Beyond people loving: Stereophonic has been nominated for more Tony Awards than any play, ever. Me: “meh” I don’t need this story to be told to me. We can discuss after you see it.
OPERA: can you believe it? Yes, we also went to the Metropolitan Opera! If you can, do also head to this production of Carmen! More modern/less traditional settings and re-dos don’t always work (enough with the “Shakespeare, but in a Supermarket” vibe…) but this one does. Carmen is a tough remake, like it’s a gendered, out of synch with today story, but they really did it. Amazing set gag. How did they get an 18-wheeler onto that stage?
