The "Motorcade" Edition
Greetings from the East Coast summer fundraising hub known as The Hamptons!
News:
Purchased tickets to awesome youngster/millenial fundraising event for Josh Shapiro at an old friend’s house. Moments later, he cancelled as well as his other two commitments. Either he needs to get ready to be in Pennsylvania Tuesday for a good reason or he needs to be in Pennsylvania to…clean up a bit of a mess and go back to running his state?
Well the traffic that was defrayed by him not doing three events was more than made up for by the snarl of just one fundraiser by one other guy who caused it to take me an hour and change to drive five miles from dinner to house.
Anyhoo, our usual whirlwind of seeing only really good friends and staying close to the home base I like to think of as the most luxurious casual place in the world (but might make for a good White Lotus season) worked great. I learned a few things:
Gentle encouragement to get a friend back on the tennis court for a light game paid off. Amazing fun was had by all, also by way of the most delicious and fun hospitality of other awesome and smart friends. Except return-tennis player’s Nike tennis shoes literally fell apart during one point which everyone agreed was a never-before-seen experience.
Gentle encouragement *by* a friend to get me to turn on subscriptions for this substack. Currently investigating, but many have offered via some function of Substack to pay me! But somehow also I could keep everything free! Best of both worlds which I have yet to unpack/understand. Stay tuned but in the meantime if you want to give me money, please send my Amazon pre-order rankings up the charts and pre-order my book! It’s all about the algorithm, folks:
PRE-ORDER at Amazon, arriving there and then poste-haste to you Tuesday, September 3. I’m excited!
Also learned, on this trip, that there are two incredible bakers, partners in a tiny business. They had a little table and were selling their delicious light and flaky linzer torte cookies and other goodies at a very convenient (with emphasis on locally made products) Suffolk County “Welcome Center”! Great rest stop before the long crawl up 27 to points eastward. I have shamefully forgotten the name of their company because we gave out all the items we bought as little housegifts! I get no cookies in return for this endorsement btw! Gotta work on my sponsorship deals in addition to my subscriber base, come to think of it.
I also learned that, if I venture out of my circle of I already-know-who-I-know semi-hibernation circle, I can re-remember that it turns out I know what feels like “everybody else.” A good thing or not I’m not sure. But I think when I know I have the option of going back into semi-hibernation, it feels fun!
Conclusion: change (in (very) small doses) is (might be) good for me.
Next up next weekend: Mixed Doubles tourney! This is a tough one. Wish me luck!
In the meantime, steer clear of the awesome lightning storms cels moving around Long Island and, apparently, much of the country. Don’t live on a two lane road when presidential candidates come to town. Support local bakers. Jump in a pool. Go out of your way to have an actual, real, summer tomato — and don’t fall for the supermarket “heirloom” ubiquitous moniker on your quest.
And have a good read: this week’s juicy, vine-ripened newsletter is all the news by, for, and about women. From Politics to Pop Culture and most everything in between.
