The "Proudly" Edition
Dear Readers,
Happy June, glorious days of spring, and Pride Month to all!
My MCR: Mini-Content-Roundup:
“Film:”
Babes — Love any ‘let me show you how it really is’ baby delivery and child-rearing content with laughs. Amusing, several laugh out louds. Wanted more rom-com stakes-setting and payoff. Enjoyed and hope lots of folks go see it.
Challengers — I mean really? I mean…all I can say is that the actors and the directors just BROUGHT IT and somehow got away with it? But did they? Was it really really good or was it literally the most ridiculous film I have ever seen? And, speaking of Pride, imo it needed either more (gay) sex or more camp, and — curveball coming from me — less tennis!
Hit Man — Thank you, Richard Linklatter, for getting all the people who were in their 20s in the ‘90s AND all the people currently in their 20s in their 90s throwback looks into the same theater. Why are hit men endless sources for content, even for one whose premise is that there’s no such thing as hit men, in reality? I enjoyed it!
“TV:”
Baby Reindeer — ‘Everyone’ was talking about this a few weeks ago — or at least Netflix was talking about it being Number 1 on their splash page all the time. It is a wow and a half. People are loving truly dark stuff these days/years. This adds super weird and original story to it, even though it is actually someone’s story (the writer, director, and star’s, in fact).
The Jinx Part II — also Netflix. Speaking of murderous murderers (and also people who go on trial for more than one crime and it captures the nation’s attention and you pray for a guilty verdict and a loss on appeal), this twisted story maybe needed a less episode or two but one of them is so good, so compelling, it’s worth the absolute whole thing. Watch Season 1 if you missed it.
Ripley — Trifecta for Netflix today: Starring Andrew Scott, who was in the fabulous movie All Of Us Strangers — he plays creepy really good!. This super-beautiful-to-watch re-re-(re?)-make of the Patricia Highsmith book is still a con-man story. I would prefer more check-kiting, less murder! But I am watching every second of its also-too-many episodes. Like Saltburn and a raft of other content, I love a resentful class divide story more than anything.
I am not a true crime (or even fictional/fake crime) fanatic, but I am also recommending the Nicole Brown Simpson documentary on Lifetime. It is the first time her sisters have cooperated with the film-makers and told the story from their perspective. I am super-proud of the team that created it, too. I don’t rightly know where one watches or streams “Lifetime” any more but go find it.
In my upcoming Book I Will Likely Never Write, I can tell a good story about how exactly the old brand of the long-time (at the time) #1 ranked (but not ‘cool’) network, Lifetime, branding directly impacted our legendary Bravo re-brand when we took it over — 20 years ago, in fact. Cheers to us for somehow thinking that “#1” was not something to aspire to but “breaking the Top 30 and being really cool” was. More on that later, or possibly never.
