The "Red Light, Green Light" Edition
Hello, Hello from foreign shores!
Have you ever been in a hotel room and you hang the “Do Not Disturb” sign on your doorknob, but you also (somehow, inadvertently) turn on a little green light outside your door that means “please service my room”? Well, you can imagine why this scenario has popped into my mind.
I feel for housekeeping. It’s a tough enough job, already, to clean rooms. Gross. Then you add the tough decision as to how much more trouble you’re going to get into— the guest comes back to dirty room after breakfast and freaks out and calls Housekeeping who explains that the Do Not Disturb sign was out, but the guest yells “but my green light was on!” Or, the guest gets awakened by loud knocking on said door and is asked the (perfectly legitimate question, I guess, given that the green light was on ) “would you like your room serviced?” That’s a tough one. Known as a “no-win” situation. I think I would call my supervisor in a hurry and ask what to do. Or maybe I’d just wait til I had cleaned all the rooms and then see what time it is and re-evaluate. Or maybe I’d think “this happens all the time, there is a green light but also a DND sign on this door, so I bet that the person’s still in there, because when they come out they will see that both are there and will choose the option they actually want when they leave.” Final observation: even if it is my job to clean rooms, I would opt not to confront this tricky situation before 9am on a Saturday.
Which could explain my peeved-ness and distinct lack of creativity as I put our beloved Sunday Paper to bed a bit early, so to speak, as I have big plans for the rest of this very early spring, fine soft day
The LZ Sunday Paper is full of news in both the hard and soft varieties — it’s the most important news of the week for women in the world: Politics, Business, Health, Pop Culture, The Arts, Sports, and more.
