The "Seeded" Edition
Greetings, July Subscribers —
Today, the day I normally put the LZSP together and then to bed, is my first tourney (tennis, that is) of the season. I have a great partner, albeit I’ve never played with him before. Or against. But I did play side by side, court-wise, for about 6 hours this spring in a wonderful charity tournament in Fort Greene Park, for the benefit of the Kings County Tennis League. Kings County, fygeographic i, is the wonderful borough of Brooklyn, New York, brother county to Queens. Which is both a county and a borough. I wonder most Brooklynites would rather be Kings. The history of place names is interesting, especially for iconic yet every day places like New York’s famous five boroughs. Cheers to you, Mr. Jonas Bronck, Swedish sea captain and explorer of 1639! Would have a whole different ring to it if The Yankees were The Bronck’s Bombers!
Back to the courts: in the charity tourney my today-partner was playing with his men’s doubles partner next to me. I was playing with my partner, my actual partner, aka my husband, next court over. The two teams constituted a “Team.” So these 4 Teams (of 2 teams each) played like crazy all day. Our captial-T Team did real good and we each got to the finals! Our opponents were fun and fair and about 20 times better than us—like literally in a different League. So we lost in that final to them. Anyway our opponents today in the first round are also tough, but really really nice, say the scouting reports (aka my town friends and relatives).
We shall see. Hopefully I’m channeling more Alcaraz-ish than Jabeur-ish today.
