The "Thither and Yon" Edition
Hello, One and All—
I hope you are affected only positively by today’s time change. I’m always delighted to trade being a bit sleep-laggy in exchange for more light in the sky at the end of the day. The sky would be nice to see, one of these months. It has been a mild-ish winter with few blue-sky crisp days. Very few.
Do any of you remember when I asked which luggage you all thought was good, particularly carry-on? Thank you as always to my engaged and vocal subscribers— I got a lot of very well-thought-out recommendations. Though I am not really a procrastinator, I remained paralyzed. So those emails have been in my inbox for quite some time—the callout went out in May of 2022!
Well, two years later, my even more ancient — literally 20+ year old Tumi — while it’s still rolling, is among the more depressing of my material possessions. I was spurred into action as I hit a busy travel season that includes a series of short-trips-but-they-include-intra-Europe-short-hops. Those little planes are very finicky about overhead space, they are just built different and smaller. I do it round trip four times a year so I thought how about I get one that fits in there. I also have longer trips but don’t want to check a bag. Then I got served this article that seemed to read my brain.
Okay, this is gonna be like those New York Times real estate articles where they give you the buyer’s goals and a choice of three different apartments and they reader picks which one they would pick and also picks the one they think the buyer picked. So here goes. You have my parameters: a combination of many short trips both in the U.S. but also to/from Europe with a second destination; longer trips, too, but I don’t like to check a bag. Value is an issue for me, more than, technically, the actual amount of money. Also, I don’t think I want another totally black bag.
Read the article and email me what you think I bought! I depart tomorrow evening and will be back Wednesday evening (yes! to/from Europe!) — and I will report back as to whether my new suitcase fit and how it, and I, rolled.
You can read by the windowsill in the late light today— all the great articles by, for, and about women in the news this week. Every Sunday, a digestible compendium of politics, business, media, science, health, the arts and pop culture. Plus maybe one or two things that just amuse you.
