The "To Be Continued..." Edition
Greetings from Providence, R.I., where I am celebrating a reunion and a graduation at Brown University. I know you are wishing me and family all the best, but that’s not even the biggest thing to celebrate.
Nine years ago almost to the day, I had an idea for a book. It took about five years after that for me to have the time to start to focus on it — thanks, Covid! And now, four years later, it’s…FINISHED!
Cumbersome title, sleek book, I’m choosing it as the unofficial Pic(k) of the Week:
We launched it this weekend here at Brown…only fitting, right? If the Brown community ain’t interested, who would be? Hopefully, you! Yes, the hope is that it is compelling to a much wider readership.
The mission of the book is to unspool the history of Brown from a unique perspective, that of the resignation letters of the trustees and fellows of the Corporation of Brown University. They tell a story of progress and passion in American higher education from a never-before-seen perspective.
Spanning 1764 to 2023, manuscript to email, the letters provide a unique glimpse into the evolution of the institution’s enduring traditions and help inform our perspectives on the range of thorny (and getting thornier) issues with which universities still grapples.
When I did have the idea so long ago, I had a simple mission. To make public some of the profound human stories that people share. To make sense of (middle-)age-old question, ‘how did I get here’? And most importantly, to build bridges to current and future generations of students who are desperately for searching for people who will listen to *their* stories.
I guarantee that you will find a letter that really makes you think. The photos are cool. The progress of “firsts” of many kinds are a journey worth reading unto itself.
If you want it now, click right now: the book is available exclusively at The Brown Bookstore until our official publication date, Tuesday 9/3 in honor of “Back to School.” It’s available for pre-order at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many, many independent bookstores. If you do want to peruse the “preview,” Amazon does a good job — the pages really come alive as you roll-over the preview images and text.
I’ll give you some more tidbits as we near the official date, including my preface and some cool images. But since it’s kind of launched into the world as of today, I wanted my beloved and faithful subscribers to have first dibs on the limited distribution.
ENJOY reading all the letters, and enjoy this long weekend. Hopefully you will also have a chance to read the usual fare in today’s LZSP. It’s the week’s most important news by and about women, delivered straight to your inbox. Politics, Pop Culture and everything in between.
